Of all the yers I have been watching Skem, this has got to rate as one of the finest performances..ever !! forget the glory days, this was as good as it gets.
Travelling up there on a snowy saturday afternoon there was some doubt if the game would take place, Im glad it did! Kendal riding high in the Premier Division were wiped away from the very first minute, Skem played like the winter sun, sharp and crisp . It was a joy to behold. The Skem faithful, who made up over half the 152 attendance, all congregated together and made a noise throughout. The scoreline flattered Kendal as it could have been double figures.
The locals were well impressed "Your the best side we have seen in years" and "Your the Arsenal of the non league" were just some of the comments made. I have never felt as proud being a Skem supporter.
This is the Kendal match report.
You get games where you just have to hold your hand up and admit that the oppostion were better than us, this was one of them games. Having survived an early pitch inspection and with the sun shining, the Town fans were in good spirits going into this game. However, apart from Lee Ashcroft charging down their 'keeper's attempted clearence and the ball going to safety, the writing was on the wall early on. Kendal Town 'keeper David Newnes reacted smartly to save at the feet of Skem's Kyle Armstrong. Chris Almond then shot wide for the visitors. After a good Skem build up Mark Houghton also shot wide. In a rare excursion up the field, Michael Cole had an effort saved. George Donnelly then fired over as the pressure on the Town goal increased. Carl Osman went on a fine run, but his cross was cut out. Two further efforts on the Town goal by Armstrong and Donnelly were thwarted by Newnes. The inevitable goal for Skem arrived on 36 minutes as Houghton's shot hit the post and rebounded into the path of Chris Almond to score. Kendal Town should have levelled minutes later, but Ian Kilford was denied by Skem 'keeper Ryan McMahon. Just before the break Kyle Armstrong headed home a corner on 45 minutes. The second half had only just started and Skem were 0-3 up on 47 minutes as Adam Burchill scored past a static Town defence. Shaun Foster nearly added to their tally, but his effort went over the bar. Cole and Lee Mulvaney both went close for Town. The game was over as a contest on 53 minutes as Mark Houghton made it 0-4 to Skem as Town failed to clear their lines. Craig Hobson was denied by a last ditch challenge. Probably the most embarrassing goal of the game was Skem's fifth. Town had a free kick on the halfway line, but managed to pass the ball to a Skem attack that broke and George Donnelly netted on 57 minutes. Fearing a drubbing, the Town supporters were given something to cheer, Hobson hit the post and Mulvaney's follow up was headed off the line. Then a great 1-2 between Osman and Hobson saw Osman hit hit the post, after a bit of a scramble Osman scissor kicked the ball home on 80 minutes. Hobson then had a header well saved. A bad day for Town, but not many teams will play as well as Skelmersdale did.
