Match: UniBond League Home to Skelmersdale United Date: Saturday 23 January 2010 HT: 0-1 FT: 1-1 Attendance: 163 Goal Scorers: Dean Canning Next Match: Monday25 January 2010 Home to Droylsden FC Kick-off 7.45pm - Manchester Premier Cup Finally after nearly six weeks of not being able to play due to the weather, Curzon finally saw football at the Tameside Stadium. Ironically they entertained Skelmersdale United who was their last opponents back on December the 14th in the UniBond Presidents Cup which saw Skelmersdale going through to the semi final courtesy of a late, late injury time goal. Just before kick off a presentation was made to Gary Lowe to mark his 500th game in charge of Curzon but within 5 minutes they could have been 1-0 down after keeper Javier Sanchez brought down Mark Houghton inside the box, he was given a yellow card but redeemed himself as he smartly got down to his left to palm away Houghton’s penalty. This set the pace of the game as both sides worked hard to gain control & look for the early goal. Curzon were patience in their build up while United opted for the long ball, this was playing dividends for them especially down the left hand side but their final ball into the box rarely troubled Curzon. Midway through the half, chances were few & far between as both sides gave the ball away to cheaply, Curzon had the ball in the net after Phil Edgehill looped his effort over Ryan McMahon in the United’s goal. But referee Gavin Hock adjudged that Edgehill had handled in the process. United’s best chance saw Karl Ledsham strike just outside the box but his effort was pushed over the crossbar by Sanchez. In the second half the game came to life with both sides pressing forward looking for a goal but it wasn’t until the 74th minute when United broke the deadlock. United forced a second corner & Liam Loughlin put it past Sanchez. The lead only lasted 4 minutes when the ball played forward should of easily been collected by United’s keeper McMahon but he let the ball slip from his grasp and Dean Canning who was bearing down on him collected the loose ball went around McMahon, doing well to keep the ball from crossing the goal line to place the ball into the net at the near post. The final 12 minutes saw both sides desperately search for the winner but it ended in a 1-1 stalemate which was a fair reflection on the game.
