Skelmersdale United FC turn to dance instructor to maintain fitness
Jan 14 2010 by Philip Kirkbride, Ormskirk Advertiser
SKELMERSDALE UNITED are taking a unique approach at beating the wintry weather - by hiring a dance instructor.
Whilst clubs struggle to find ways of maintaining fitness with so many of the region’s pitches unplayable at present, Skem boss Tommy Lawson has kept his players on their toes with some unusual training sessions.
Lawson is adamant his side will not miss a single nights training and says thinking outside the box is the best way to beat the snow and ice.
United are scheduled to welcome Wakefield to the Skem and Ormskirk College Stadium on Saturday but after the postponement of Tuesday evening’s rearranged match with Prescot Cables, Lawson is not overly optimistic the game will be played.
Lawson said: “The pitch is really bad and believe it or not, it still has a covering of snow on it in some parts. The groundstaff were down on Tuesday and we can’t see the game getting the go-ahead on Saturday, not at all.
“We have actually brought in a dance instructor from the company Attitude; her and her assistant have been through quite a few times and held sessions in the facilities we have at the club. You have got to be inventive in these situations and because of this we have not missed a single training session throughout the whole period.
“I have to admit, watching some of these 6’ 3” lads doing aerobics is quite amusing but one thing they have been is so committed to it, which is a credit to them. The girls have been working them hard and the lads are appreciative of it.
“The sessions have been a mix of aerobics and stretching for example but have been intensive sessions and have helped improve mobility but like I say, watching some of the lads has been comical because after all they are footballers, not dancers.
